Arrive in Lhasa, take a rest and acclimatize. Optional evening walk to Potala Square for photos. Ascend the 1,000 steps to the Potala Palace, the former residence of the Dalai Lamas, its 13 stories rising 170 meters above Lhasa. Inside, golden stupas contain the remains of past lamas, and murals depict the entire history of Tibetan Buddhism in vivid mineral pigments.
Join the circumambulation at Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most sacred shrine. The air is thick with juniper incense and the murmur of mantras as pilgrims, some having journeyed for months, press their foreheads to the worn flagstones in reverence.
